Marilyn
Hamilton has received many honors, accomplishing more in her lifetime
than many of her able-bodied counterparts. She
is the founder of the Quickie Wheelchair company (bought out by
Sunrise Medical), that has revolutionized the wheelchair industry over
the last twenty years. Her story has been featured in three books and countless
magazine articles. She
has won two silver medals in the Paralympic Ski Championships and has
twice won the US Women’s Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.
However,
perhaps her greatest accomplishment came when she founded Winners On
Wheels in Fresno, California in 1991.
After an accident that left her without the use of her legs,
Marilyn wanted to start a program that would help local youth in
wheelchairs overcome the negative feelings and challenging situations
as a result of life in a wheelchair.
In
nine short years, her vision and the need for our program has enabled
WOW to become a national network of programs currently reaching
children in wheelchairs in thirty-six communities and twenty-two
states across the nation.
